You wouldn’t be the first person that it happened to. In fact, you wouldn’t even be the hundredth. We all have moments where we forget passwords, and that is why there is always a way to reset things. If you have Windows 7 running on your machine, and you find that you have forgotten your password, don’t worry. You won’t need a computer support team to get things straightened out.
The Password Reset Disc
Now, the simple solution to forgetting a password is using your password reset disc, which you had the option to set up when you first created a log on for the machine. If you did set up a disc, then recovering your information is a breeze. If you haven’t yet forgotten your password, but you are afraid you will, now is a great time to set up one of these discs. You can contact a computer repair service if you need assistance with it.
If you did not set up the disc and you have now forgotten your password, you may be in a bit of a pickle, but there is a way to recover your information without computer help. You just need to follow some simple steps.
Resetting Your Password
This is a somewhat difficult task that can take up to an hour to complete. If you have trouble with any of the steps, the best thing to do would be to contact a computer support service.
- Start by inserting your Windows 7 installation disc. Then, you will need to restart your computer with the disc inside the drive.
- Your computer will boot from that disc and you will need to click next on a screen about language and keyboards that will appear.
- Click on the link that says “repair your computer.”
- You will have to wait a few moments.
- Your computer will search for installations and you will see a location listed. Make sure to write this down.
- When you see an operating system list, choose “Windows 7” and click Next.
- You will see system recovery options and you need to choose command prompt.
- You will now have command prompt open on your computer and you need to type two lines of commands exactly:
Copy d:windowssystem32utilman.exe
d: (use whatever letter of the drive you wrote down earlier here and in the next line)
copy d:windowssystem32cmd.exe d:windowssystem32utilman.exe
- You will be asked if you want to overwrite, so answer yes.
- Take the disc out and restart your computer.
- When the Windows logo appears on the screen, click on the pie square at the bottom left of the screen.
- You will see command prompt again. This time, you are going to go to the net user command (get help with this from computer support if needed). Replace myusername with whatever you want to use, and replace mypassword with the password you want to use.
- Close the command prompt.
- Log in
